Spread the "Tudors" love! Finally got round to watching the first episodes of The Tudors. Golly Jonathan Rhys Meyers is pretty; but my favourite has to be Sam Neill as Cardinal Wolsey. Subtle, devious, calculating, intelligent, corrupt and patriotic, he is a fantastic Talleyrand-like figure. And Jeremy Northam has unexpected depth as Thomas More; I last saw him as Ivor Novello in Gosford Park and it's nice to discover him in an entirely different range - from gigolo to King's mentor. | | Wednesday, August 16th, 2006 | | 1:58 pm |

Meme: Five characters in sore need of a punch in the nose
1. Fabrice del Dongo in La Chartreuse de Parme, for not seeing that La Sanseverina is miles above that little girl whose name I don't even remember. 2. Raistlin in Dragonlance. That angsty Gothy baby spiel is so adolescent! 3. Luke "but-I-was-going-to-pick-converters-in-A nchorhead" Skywalker. *runs from zoethe* 4. Mrs Proudie in The Warden and Barchester Towers. Evil, mean-spirited, nasty crone. 5. George in A Single Man. He's Christopher Isherwood minus the talent and the charm, IOW a particularly unpleasant Gary Stu. | | Monday, October 10th, 2005 | | 2:36 am |

REC: "Though The Night Yield No Glimmer" by scoradh Go read. Go read now. Though The Night Yield No GlimmerThis is a Draco/Goyle fic, and in its way it's just as stunning as that other strange but marvellous pairing, allecto's The Chosen, which was Harry/Crabbe. I suppose it's because once you've thought up an unusual combination, you really have to work it through to make it believable. Anyway, Though The Night Yield No Glimmer is a post-war, bleak, unsentimental fic, and it's about love. Actually. Current Mood: bouncy | | Monday, August 2nd, 2004 | | 1:56 pm |
Happy birthday, ivyblossom! Your wonderful fics pulled me into this fandom! | | 3:18 am |
Chapter 15 of "Draco Veritas" is up
Well, this tears it: this is the fic, or rather the trilogy, that got me into fanfic, but I find I can't much care any longer. (That, and the wait between chapters is simply too long.) The angst is so drawn-out as to become entirely predictable; the overwritten twists and turns of the Voldemort plot now bore me silly; and it's obvious the author plays at almost-pairing Draco with every character available just to tease the readers. This fic has become too slick, too self-referential, and far too self-indulgent; and the writing suffers. It's as if Cassie Claire, who's a fantastically gifted writer, had somewhat tired of the HP fandom, but felt she owed it to finish this. I am much looking forward to any original writing she will produce, and I'd much rather re-read her utterly brilliant A Season in Hell and After the Flood. These are Cassie at her best, with spare, evocative writing, and a sharp, wry understanding of teen-age angst. The understated ending of ATF is a model of how to put a point across with a deeply satisfying economy of means. Current Mood: disappointed | | Monday, July 12th, 2004 | | 12:39 am |

Well I never
Gacked from littleneedle. Some of these things happened when I was really, really little (haven't peed myself since I was two, so get your minds out of the gutter), and I should mention that the police arresting me were Communist Yugoslav in the 8Os, for poking my reporter's nose over a border fence. ( Put an X in front of the things you've never done ) Current Mood: amused | | Tuesday, February 24th, 2004 | | 12:21 am |

The 200 Best Books BBC Meme!
The ones I read are in bold (and the ones that are on my bookshelves but which I somehow haven't got round to read are in italics.) How do they pick the books, BTW? I mean, Jean Auel??? Four Thomas Hardys but no Anthony Trollope? Jeffrey Archer and no Balzac? Sheesh. ( Still, can't resist a list... )I really should think up an alternative list. A new H/D classic...
...is pandarus's Invisible to See. Jane Austen meets Dornford Yates, and a perfectly charming Neville, too. And some completely unforced, but piping hot sex scenes. It takes the boys quite a bit to come out of their respective closets, which is as it should be; and even longer to admit they don't hate one another. With terrific snark from Draco and a decidedly unromanticised Snape as well. Absolutely terrific. ETAGacked from the selfsame pandarusIt says I'm a man! 70%! Silly machine. *g* Current Mood: amused | | Friday, December 26th, 2003 | | 1:31 am |
Spectacularly vulgar
I have bought a spectacularly vulgar and financially indefensible (it costs the price of a half-way decent used car) huge plasma screen TV. [*] Not that I was planning to. And then my 15-year-old Philips telly with the cheap replacement remote died on me, just as I'd received from Amazon the compleat boxed Sharpe, the compleat boxed Hornblower, and Seasons 1 and 2 of The West Wing. I heard a faint "poof" when I hit the Power button, and black it went, never to revive. So for three weeks I circle Darty, the "Circuit City" of France, sniffing longingly at the monster screens and ruminating "preciousssss...my preciousssss" in an undertone. Now I got me one, arriving Saturday morning with bells and whistles. It's a 42-inch Panasonic, in case you're interested. Meaning I had to brave Ikea on the eve of Christmas to buy the new lady in my life a dedicated table and shelves for the DVDs currenty lying on the floor in occasional piles. Today, crushed fingers and entirely too much noise for my neighours' beauty sleep as I assemble the stuff. Whee! [*] Didn't buy the steel & glass stand shown here. How they manage to fit something so impractical in those tiny Japanese homes is beyond me. The TV can either hang from the wall, or stand perfectly well on a built-in central stand the size of two hardcover books. In case you wondered. Credit me with some restraint *cough* *cough* *cough*.
